Please note that while I strive to only list responsible breeders in this section of the dog business directory, all I have to go by is the breeders’ websites. Please do your research on each breeder and buy responsibly. This post and the following breeder submission criteria may help if you aren’t sure how to recognise a Backyard Breeder (BYB) or why it’s important to buy from a responsible breeder. More breed sections will be added below as breeders are accepted.

Breeder Submission Criteria
The following criteria are used when evaluating breeder submissions to the 1 Fit Mutt dog business directory:
- Does the breeder perform all required health tests on both parents to ensure the health of the bitch and puppies? These tests may vary from breed to breed as each breed is predisposed to its own problems.
- Does the breeder have a waiting list as opposed to dumping puppies into stores or advertising them in newspapers after they’re born? A responsible breeder will not bring puppies into the world without having homes for them.
- Does the breeder take responsibility for the puppies they produce? Should a family be unable to keep a puppy or dog produced by the breeder, will the breeder take the dog back and/or attempt to find a suitable home for it?
- Does the breeder screen potential buyers as opposed to handing puppies off to anyone who comes along?
- Does the breeder make themselves available to the owners of the puppies should they have any questions or emergencies?
- Does the breeder sufficiently inform and educate their buyers about the breed and puppy ownership in general?
- Does the breeder ensure that puppies do not leave the mother until at least 8 weeks of age?
- Does the breeder get all puppies vet checked to ensure they are in good health?
- Is the breeder able to show the potential owners the parents of the puppies and do they allow owners to physically see the dogs’ living conditions? (or provide sufficient information about the sire if they do not own him?)
We cannot always screen for all of these things when receiving submissions from breeders as we can only really look at their website. Rather, we look for any red flags (such as suspicion that the breeder does not do any of the above). When looking for a responsible breeder, please keep these points in mind.
